Passage One

My family's house was in a small, quiet suburb in a good school district. When I was a child, I would get up before the sun, usually to get a head start on with my Barbie dolls for the day. My parents permitted this as long as I stayed quietly in my room and didn't bother anyone. Eventually they would rise at a reasonable human hour and drag themselves into the kitchen for their first cups of coffee.

Playing alone in my room with my toys was only my second favorite morning activity as a little girl. It was surpassed by the outings I would go on with my father. We went on these enough times that it became a delightful ritual, but because of the comforting sameness of each trip, they all blend together in my memories as one event.

He came into my bedroom before the sun was up,shaking me gently and telling me it was time to go.With the energy of a child who went to bed at 8 pm and didn’t have a job, I hardly needed more coaxingthan that. I was up, in my mismatched printed leggings and long underwear under a long sleeved shirt, ready to go.

My breath curled into mist in the front yard as we walked toward his 1997 FordRanger. He tilted the passenger seat forward and I clambered into the back of thecab of the truck. There were two mini seats that faced each other from either sidewall in the back seat. I unfolded one and strapped the lap belt across me.Itscngine rumbled with a distinctive, straining whine. You could always hear that carcoming from blocks away when he was on his way home.

The Waitomo Caves are one of the most famous places to visit in New Zealand. Each year, around half a million people visit the caves. Why do so many people visit these caves? It’s because they are so different from other caves around the world.

From bat dens in Texas to sinkholes in Australia, caves are usually dark places. The Waitomo Caves don’t follow this rule, though. The Waitomo Caves are lit up by thousands of small bugs that glow in the dark. These glowworms line the cave walls and ceiling, filling the caves with a soft blue-green light.Because of this light, people can see the beautiful rock formations throughout the caves.

The glowworms that line the cave are not actually worms—they’re baby flies. The baby flies begin glowing bright blue soon after they hatch from eggs in the cave. They use this light to attract other bugs that are lost in the cave. When the lost bugs see the light, they go toward it.Then the glowworms can catch the bugs and eat them. And when the glowworms are very hungry, they can shine their lights even brighter to catch even more bugs.

The glowworms have made the Waitomo Caves a must-see stop on any vacation to New Zealand. You can hike through the caves or take a slow-moving boat ride through them. The natural glow of the caves shows how magical nature can be.If you’re ever in New Zealand, you may want to check these caves out!

1.燃放炮竹烟花是中国节日传统。

Should Fireworks Be Banned During Holidays?

Setting off fireworks has been a cherished traditional custom in China for centuries, especially during major festivals like the Spring Festival. It is deeply rooted in Chinese culture, symbolizing people's wishes for good luck, happiness and a prosperous new year, and adding a strong festive atmosphere to celebrations.

However, opinions on this tradition vary greatly. Some people argue that fireworks should be banned,as they cause severe air and noise pollution, pose fire hazards, and may lead to accidental injuries. Others insist that banning fireworks would erase a vital part of cultural heritage and make holidays less lively.

From my perspective, a complete ban is not the best solution. Instead, we can implement strict regulations: limit fireworks to designated areas and time periods, promote eco-friendly low-noise fireworks, and strengthen safety supervision. This way, we can preserve our cultural tradition while minimizing its negative impacts, striking a balance between tradition and modern life.
