When I was 24, newly relocated back to my hometown and searching for a sense of community, an intergenerational friendship wasn't where I expected to find connection. I thought I might find it with my downstairs neighbors, a grad-student couple with an army of cats. Maybe with my friends from high school, though we had drifted apart over the years. Maybe back at the community theater, where rd just tried out for a play and felt easy with the assistant director, a woman my age who I could imagine becoming a friend.

And while all those connections have become dear to me since, none of them hold a candle to the bond I found in my then-56-year-old castmate, who brought his own objects to rehearsal and made references I didn't understand.

When I met Ken, I initially found him bold but kind. He'd make a joke, then immediately look me in the eye and apologize, visibly embanassed by his own words, as if he couldn't believe he'd said something inappropriate in front of me. I'd sniff and then he'd look shocked for a different reason. It felt like we were, in real time, discovering that the gaps of difference between us actually had islands of commonground.

There are certain threads that tie us together in ways we didn't expect. At first, they just seemed superficial, like our love for honor movies and dark Irish comedy. But we both remember the first time we weretruly vulnerable with each other asthe real startto our friendship.

Now I'm 28 and Ken is 60, and our connection has grown into something I couldn't replace because we took a chance on each other, a choice that research increasingly suggests people across generations would benefit from making. Friendships like ours might look unusual, but they are seriously good for your health. According to a 2023 study published in The Journal of Aging Studies, there are cognitive, physical and psychosocial benefits for younger and older adults who regularly interact across generational lines.

24.How did the author feel when she first returned to herhometown?

A.Their similar tastein movies.B. Their being open andvulnerable.

C. Their easy talk inthetheater.D. Their shared funnyexperiences.

26.What will the author most probably discussnext?

A.Details of the2023study.B. More shared hobbies withKen.

C. Reasons for makingolder friends.D. Other stories of cross-agefriendships.

27.Why did the author write thetext?

A.To share her newfound friendship withKen.

B.To encourage people to make elderlyfriends.

C.To show benefits of crossing age infriendship.

D.To introduce advantages of closefriendships.

Everyone has a book inside them, or so the saying goes. In this day and age, those who want help mapping the story out can receive instructions online from some of the world's most popular authors. And now Agatha Christie, the world's bestselling writer of fiction, with more than 2 billion copies sold, is instructing viewers in the art of the whodunnit (4贞探/卜说)一even though she died in 1976.

Christie's course is the result not of recently unearthed video fbotage, but artificial intelligence. BBC Maestro, an online education platform, brought the idea to the Christie family, which still controls 36% of Agatha Christie Ltd. They subsequently authorized BBC to use the image of “Queen of Crime“ to teach the mysterious writing style.

A team of almost 100, including Christie scholars as well as AI specialists, worked on the project. Vivien Keene, an actress, provided a stand-in for the author; Christie's face was mapped on top. Crucially, Ms Keene5s credible performance employs only Christie's words: extracts from her own writings, notebooks and interviews.

In this way, the creator of classical characters Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple shares handy writing tips, such as the neatest ways to deal with fictional victims. Be careful of poisons, as each works in a unique way. Beginner authors can “always rely on a dull blow to the head”. Many of Christie's writing rules concern playing fair. She practised misdirection and laid ""false clues^^ alongside true ones, but insisted that her plots do not cheat or hide key evidence: "I never deceive my readers." She tells potential writers to use snowstorms to isolate murder scenes (as they bring down telephone wires) and cites the clue-generating value of railway timetables, ink stains and cut-upnewspapers.

By relying on Christie's own words, BBC Maestro hopes to avoid charges of deepfakery. At the same time, it is the fbcus on quotation that limits the course's value as a creative-writing toolbox.

28.Why is AI used according to thepassage?

A.To bring a late writer backto life.B. To present a master writingcourse.

C. To promote the image of afamous writer.D. To establish an online education platform.

29.What is the main job of VivienKeene?

A.Creating new stories based on Christie'sworks.

B.Citing words directly taken from Christie'sdocuments.

C.Using her own facial expressions to match Christie'swords.

D.Communicating with a team of Christie scholars and herfamily.

30.What does paragraph 4 mainly talkabout?

A.Christie's practicalsecuritytips.B. Christie's way of dealing withpeople.

C. Christie's logic ofdevelopingstories.D. Christie's committed workingprinciples.

31.How does the author view BBC Maestro5sstrategy?

A.Acostly trade-off.B. A creative breakthrough.

C. Acautious oveneaction.D. A well-intentioned failure.

Solutions to the plastic waste crisis are often presented using words that can unfairly influence how we judge them, new research argues. The paper, authored by the Sustainable Materials Innovation Hub at The University of Manchester, explores how the choice of terminology affects our understanding of end-of-life solutions for plastic waste. While recycling has long been promoted as a solution for plastic sustainability, it comes in many forms, and can sometimes hide the real discussions around sustainability.

The researchers, Seitzinger, Lahive, and Shaver, find that directional terms such as “upcycling” and “downcycling“ lack clear definitions as value judgments, and that their use can twist perceptions of the benefits, potentially creating a banier to circularity. "Downcycling,“ for example, suggests the productionof a less desirable or “less good“ material as the final product of the recycling process, while “upcycling” carries positive associations. However, despite what these terms suggest, a downcycled stream may actually produce a high-value product, while an upcycled approach may have a greater negative environmental impact than othermethods.

Using these terms assigns unfair value to certain end-of-life plastic solution strategies, and can be used by supporters or opponents of different recycling technologies to hide genuine evaluation of their

environmental impact. The study, published in the journal Cambridge Prisms: Plastics, suggests that plastic

waste solutions consistently fail to live up to their marketed messaging, and that clearer communication of the true value of the product from a recycling process is essential to encourage investment in proper plastic waste management.

The researchers argue that no single solution offers a quick fix, and that it is wrong for the terminology to suggest otherwise. They call for greater clarity over how we judge end-products. They suggest a “spiral system^^ of reuse, in which plastic materials are treated as complex mixtures like crude oil, rather than simple goods. By moving away from direction-loaded terminology, plastic waste solutions can be judged on measurable environmental and economic value of the final product, rather than an assumed or subjective value based on language that is not always supported by full life-cycle assessment or economicanalysis.

32.What does the research find about “upcycling" and"downcycling''?

A.They are merely scientifically defined. B. They may mislead people5sjudgment.

C. They measureenvironmentalimpact.D. They promote all plastic solutions.

33.What can be learned from the example of “downcycled“materials?

A.They tend to bring inferior finalproducts.

C. They harm the environment seriously.

B.They can generate high-valueproducts.

D. They represent more advanced technology,

34.Why does the author suggest a “spiral system^^ofreuse?

A.To simplify plastic wastemanagement.

C. To avoid judgment based on loaded terms.

35.What does the author call for in thepassage?

A.Stopping the use of plastic materials.

C. Judging recycling by measurable value.

B.To treat plastics as simplegoods.

D. To replace all cunent recycling methods.

B. Developing more recycling technologies.

D. Promoting upcycling over downcycling.

18-year-old Mia Carter volunteered with the Digital Literacy for Social Inclusion initiative, dedicating her Saturdays to the local community center. There, she offered the old guidance through the digital worldshowing how to tell truth from Ai-generated fiction, helping access important services with a few careful clicks and so on. Yet one person still struggled: Mr. Arthur Hale, an 82-year-old widower ( 鳏 夫 ) whose

world had slowly shrunk to the quiet rooms of his lonely home.

A smartphone from his granddaughter Lila overseas sat unused on his side table, gathering dust. "It's too much," he'd murmur to Mia, his hands-once skilled in the gentle art of gardening-now moving nervously. The digital age had left him behind in clear ways: a missed heart doctor appointment, the ongoing silence where his granddaughter's laughter should have been, the quiet firustration of struggling with a QR code at the drugstore. The man who once shared pieces from his rose bushes now spent hours looking out the window, as if watching the world speed by like a train he wasn'ton.

Mia understood the real problem was not skill, but heart. For many like Mr. Hale, technology felt less like a tool and more hke a sign that they were being ignored, a quiet conversation happening in a place they could no longer join.

One rainy afternoon, she found him staring at his phone's black screen, a single tear moving slowly down his wrinkled cheek. He had accidentally deleted the last good photo of his beloved wife. "I only wanted to see Lila,“ he whispered, the words floating in the still room. "Was that too much to ask?" Mia's heart ached. She promised him she'd help, not just with the phone, but with letting go of his fear. That evening, she stayed up late, making a simple, step-by-step guide with large pictures and clear words-justfor him.

On her next day visit, Mia sat beside Mr. Hale and picked up his smartphone.

Weeks later, a digital help corner opened in the community.
