It was thirty years ago. In my family we were two children, one employed adult, and Christmas was coming. My parents were managing, but only just, and they had started preparing us for a simpler Christmas.

So they told me, their 5-year-old daughter, well in advance that Santa Claus had received so many letters that winter that he had run out of presents. Santa is generous, they explained, but Santa is not bottomless.Everybody knew, of course, that Santa did not actually manufacture(大量生产) the gifts. He bought them, like anyone else.

For a 5-year-old, this was a disaster. But children often have an unnerving ability to solve problems before the adults around them notice. I went to my room, found old toys, and wrapped them carefully. One for my mother, one for my father, one for each of my grandparents, and some for myself and my brother. By the morning, I had become, in my own mind, the hero of Christmas. There would be presents under the tree. There would be the best part of Christmas, the opening. I had solved the first money problem of my life and brought joy to my family.

The ending was happier than I expected. Santa, it turned out, had found gifts for the young family after all. The old toys were quietly returned to my bedroom.

And yet, that Christmas has stayed with me my whole life. It is a memory about adapting to something a child has a hard time understanding. It is also a memory about something common, the kind of relative shortage and insecurity that exists in many families. That memory, and the dozens that followed, quietly built a way of thinking I never noticed I had. I came to believe that whether we had plenty of money or just about enough, we would manage, and our problems would be temporary.

24. Why did the author's parents mention Santa Claus in advance?

A. To encourage her to share presents.B. To explain their financial difficulties.

C. To teach her how Santa Claus worked.D. To lower her expectations for Christmas.

25. What happened that Christmas?

A. The author was praised for her thoughtful idea.

B. The author prepared gifts for her family in secret.

C. Santa put the author's toys back where they were.

D. The author's plan to solve the money problem failed.

26. Which of the following best describes the author as a kid?

A. Curious and patient.B. Honest and sensitive.

C. Creative and generous.D. Reliable and determined.

27. What can we infer about the author from the last paragraph?

A. She prefers to depend on herself.B. She sees hardships as manageable.

C. She finds it hard to adapt to changes.D. She underestimates the value of money.

C

It used to be easy to tell when a face was generated with AI. Whether it was an unnatural expression, impossibly smooth skin, or a noticeable third ear, early AI-generated fake human faces were simple to spot and easy to dismiss. That's just not true anymore.

Now, AI image generators can produce portraits so convincing that even careful observers struggle to distinguish fact from fiction. That's why apps such as Zoom and Tinder allow their users to submit biometric identification to help prove a real person exists behind a profile picture. But a new study suggests you can train your brain to get better at spotting fakes.

Past attempts to teach people to spot AI faces have focused on visual errors like strange ears. But those clues can disappear with a software update or by a different prompt(提示词).“The AI is getting too good,”said Amy Dawel, the lead author of the study.“And fraudsters(骗子) may avoid using pictures with obvious mistakes anyway. The result is an endless technological arms race humans are likely to lose.”

Instead, the researchers taught the participants how to recognize broader patterns in how AI systems generate images.“Our training directs people’ s attention to global qualities differing between AI and human faces,” Dawel said. Current AI image generators are trained on datasets composed of millions of images. When prompted to generate a face, they don't copy, but compose one based on the mathematical patterns shared across the faces. Individually, none of these characteristics are strange. But together, the whole is plainer than the sum of its parts which can often be sensed.

Compared with real faces, AI-generated faces tend to be more symmetrical (对称的), more balanced, and more attractive — while also being less expressive, less distinctive and significantly less memorable. The participants were trained to look for these six markers instead of obvious errors.“Even with short training sessions, the chance of spotting AI faces almost doubled,” says Tanya George, a trainer from Australian

National University.“People need training to navigate increasingly complex online environments.”

28. Why do some apps require biometric identification?

A. To replace AI image generators.B. To confirm online users' identity.

C. To limit the use of AI portrait tools.D. To improve the quality of online photos.

29. What does Amy Dawel think of the earlier ways to spot AI faces?

A. They rely much on varied prompts.B. They help fraudsters avoid detection.

C. They have fallen behind AI progress.D. They beat humans in tech competitions.

30. What were the participants told to focus on?

A. Overall facial features.B. Massive image datasets.

C. Tiny facial characteristics.D. Shared mathematical patterns.

31. What does Tanya George think of the training in the research?

A. Effective.B. Complicated.C. Temporary.D. Thorough.

The caption reads: You live alone and have no friends, so this is how you spend your Friday night. In the video, a woman enters a neat apartment, pours a glass of wine, and relaxes on the sofa, looking peaceful and content. This type of content is created by so-called“loneliness influencers,” who present solitude(独处) as comfort and freedom rather than something to avoid. While being able to enjoy your own company is psychologically healthy, romanticizing friendlessness, isolation(孤独), and loneliness can be problematic.

A recent article in The Atlanticprovides a glimpse into how these individuals view their peaceful lives, with hashtags like #cozyathome and #alenonlonely. But there is a catch: social media only captures brief moments, and interpreting isolation as aesthetics (美学) can dilutethe significance of belonging and community.

Research suggests loneliness is at epidemic levels, with 38% of U. S. adults reporting moderate-to-severe loneliness in 2022. The Surgeon General's 2023 report concluded that loneliness and social isolation increase the risk for early death, stroke, depression and dementia. Based on the potential negative outcomes, it seems to be anything but romantic or“trendy”.

According to Abraham Maslow's“Hierarchy of Needs,” love and belonging come immediately after physiological needs and safety needs. Maslow's theory of human needs dates back to 1943 and has been widely accepted in the psychology field since.

To be fair, there have certainly been positive mental health and self-care messages that influencers have helped bring to the mainstream, but sometimes their content unintentionally promotes unhealthy concepts and ideas. We need to look no further than the classic and current research to see that a promotion of loneliness and isolation comes with significant risks, which casts doubt on the beautified portrayal on social media.

Our current culture of influencers brings to mind an ancient Latin phrase: caveat emptor, or“let the buyer be cautious.” It is on us as the consumer to determine the quality of a product before purchasing it.Over time, this has become applicable to social media.

32. What does the underlined word“dilute” in paragraph 2 probably mean?

A. Reveal.B. Evaluate.C. Highlight.D. Cheapen.

33. What does the author stress by referring to the“Hierarchy of Needs”?

A. The impacts of isolation.B. The significance of psychology.

C. The differences of human needs.D. The necessity of social connection.

34. Why does the author mention the Latin phrase?

A. To offer a solution.B. To sound a warning.

C. To clarify a theory.D. To promote a product.

35. What is the best title for the text?

A. The Rise of Influencer CultureB. The Trend of Enjoying Living Alone

C. Hidden Risks of Loneliness AestheticsD. Health Problems Caused by Social Media

In our culture, popcorn and movies just go together. The association is so strong, in fact, that people joke about wanting to get some popcorn to snack on whenever there's an entertaining show to watch.____36____.

You might be surprised to learn something about popcorn and early cinemas. The steam-powered popcorn maker was invented in the late 1800s. Soon popcorn grew popular at fairs, circuses and outdoor sports events.____37____ According to the Smithsonian, theater owners had many worries. They feared loose popcorn bits would ruin carpets and soft seat coverings. Besides, loud chewing sounds would disturb viewers.____38____ Any eating noise would easily pull people's attention away from the screen.

Two factors led to popcorn's takeover as movie-goer's snack of choice. One was the introduction of films with sound in 1927. It increased the mass appeal of movies and also lessened concerns about distracting background noises. The second was the start of the Great Depression(大萧条).____39____ Popcorn was a good choice because it was cheap and could be stored for a long time. Theaters that sold popcorn not only weathered the storm of the Depression, but saw their profits increase, while theaters refusing to do that struggled.

World War II strengthened the association between movies and popcorn that the Depression started. ____40____ However, popcorn remained easy to get and just as tasty as ever. By the end of the 1940s, the idea of watching a movie was closely linked with eating popcorn in people's imagination.

Today, even if you' re having a movie night at home instead of going to a theater, you might find that the experience just doesn't feel right without popcorn.

A. Back then, all movies were silent.

B. Can popcorn truly enhance a movie night?

C. People would pass popcorn around and share it.

D. However, it was nowhere to be found in movie theaters.

E. Shortages of sugar made many sweet snacks unavailable.

F. Many theaters tried to make some profits by selling snacks.

G. But how did the link between popcorn and movies come to be?

_________________________________________________________________________________

第二节:读后续写(满分25分)

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Ms. Wilson was widely known as the strictest teacher in the entire grade. She carried herself with seriousness, never joining in casual small talk or lighthearted jokes with her students. Though her class was famously lively and mischievous (顽皮的) — always buzzing in other teachers’ lessons — the students treated her with absolute respect. No one dared to fool around or crack a silly joke in her presence, for they knew she tolerated no indiscipline.

Rarely was a smile seen on her face. Careful in every task, she ran her classes and daily work with precise perfection. Every lesson plan was flawlessly (无瑕地) organized, every assignment graded with careful attention, and every classroom rule strictly carried out. It seemed she was determined to keep every single detail of her professional life on track, leaving no room for the slightest mistake or chaos.

One ordinary morning, however, an unexpected incident broke her usual routine. As the school bell rang to signal the start of class, Ms. Wilson stepped into the classroom with her usual steady and serious expression. To her immediate confusion, silence did not fall as usual. Instead, low whispers and giggles spread through the rows of desks. Before long, Hammond, the naughtiest boy in the class, couldn't help but let out a laugh, drawing even more curious glances among the students.

Frowning, Ms. Wilson shot him her sharp warning look — the one that always instantly quieted all mischief and made everyone sit up straight. Hammond quickly shut tight his mouth, but his shoulders still shook with fun, and the awkward murmurs in the room did not fade away.

What surprised her most was that even Shelly, the most sensible and well-behaved girl in the class, could no longer keep calm. Sitting straight in her seat, Shelly's eyes were wide with amusement, and she seemed eager to say something yet a bit hesitant. When their eyes met, Shelly, with courage, gestured toward Ms.Wilson's feet with a subtle hand movement.

注意:

1.续写短文词数应为150左右;

Paragraph1:Ms. Wilson glanced down at her own   shoes and froze on the spot.

Paragraph2: Sensing Ms. Wilson's embarrassment,   Hammond bravely stood up.

2.请按如下格式在答题卡相应位置作答。
