PASSAGE A ·  WILDLIFE

Four Great Zoos Worth Protecting

The first zoos of the 1800s were often in poor condition — but the very best have changed, working to protect animals and earning official recognition from world animal groups.

The first zoos in the 1800s were often in bad condition. But now many zoos have changed a lot. The best zoos work hard to protect animals and do research. They also have official recognition from world animal groups. Here are four great zoos around the world.

Doue-La-Fontaine, France — built in an old stone cave, it is the only cave zoo in the world. It cares more about animals' health than visitors' needs, and spends much money on endangered animal protection. Its special stone walls create cool, quiet spaces that fit many animals' living needs perfectly.

Zoo Leipzig, Germany — one of the best zoos in Germany. It tries to make homes like animals' natural homes, and joins international plans to save endangered animals and send them back to the wild. Several different areas let visitors easily learn about wildlife from around the world.

Mandai Singapore Zoo — this zoo lets 4,200 animals act naturally. Keepers give daily talks to teach visitors about animals, and it joins many plans to help endangered species. Built inside a rainforest area, it offers open-air living spaces instead of small cages.

Shaldon Zoo, United Kingdom — the smallest zoo in the EAZA group, it keeps many endangered animals that people often don't notice. None of its animals were caught in the wild; though it covers only a small piece of woodland, it carries out important baby-animal raising work.

1. What is special about Doue-La-Fontaine?

A. It lies inside a stone cave.

B. It builds many big cages.

C. It offers wild-animal shows.

D. It helps do research mainly.

2. Which zoo offers tourists talks about animals every day?

A. Zoo Leipzig.

B. Shaldon Zoo.

C. Doue-La-Fontaine.

D. Mandai Singapore Zoo.

3. What do the four zoos have in common?

A. They free all animals to nature.

B. They care for animals in danger.

C. They are built within rainforests.

D. They have large woodland areas.

PASSAGE B ·  A SOLO JOURNEY

My First Solo Trip to Thailand

People quickly formed travel teams, eager to plan the perfect gap-year adventure with friends. As a self-proclaimed lone wolf, I had decided to go solo — and Thailand was my choice.

Now years have passed, but I still remember the first day clearly. It's 2016. Nineteen-year-old me is seriously sleepy after three back-to-back flights to Koh Samui, Thailand. Holding a fresh melon drink, I find myself standing among a crowd of backpackers, waiting for a boat to Koh Tao.

I reach the island after dark, before being guided into the back of a pickup truck with six other backpackers. There's something magical about racing through the forest with warm night air against my face. Every so often we pass a cafe or bar among branches and leaves; the towering trees move slowly past us. We race around the island for seemingly hours, cheering and laughing like madmen.

I finally reach my concrete home only to discover, of course, that there is no air-conditioning. I know how it feels to be inside an oven. A combination of jet lag and impatience drives me to leave my room at about 1 am. I walk to the beach, where a few young people sit outside a bar, drinking beer and playing cards. It's almost too easy to join them. So, there I sit — feeling the sand between my toes, watching the lights of distant fishing boats shine on the sea.

7. What is the author's main purpose in writing the text?

C. To stress that solo travel made him braver.

D. To share his experience of the first day.

PASSAGE C ·  THE SCIENCE OF SLEEP

Why Teenagers Need More Sleep

World Sleep Day fell on March 21st this year, and teenage sleep deprivation has come into sharp focus.

Many teenagers feel sleepy during the day because of busy schedules filled with homework, extracurricular activities and the temptation to use electronic devices. A report by the Chinese Sleep Research Society showed that more than half of young people born after 2000 in China fall asleep after midnight. In the US, 77.3 percent of high school students do not get enough sleep, according to USAFacts.

Quality sleep is imperative for people of any age, but especially so for teenagers. They need nine to ten hours of sleep each day to perform at their best, said the US National Institutes of Health — more than they need as children or adults, because of the deep mental, physical and emotional development of adolescence.

For students, sleep plays a key role in school performance by improving attention, memory and thinking. This link was first studied at Loughborough University, which compared creative performance between sleep-deprived people and those who slept normally; the first group scored lower on the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking, repeating mistakes and struggling to come up with new ideas.

More recently, in 2023, a team led by Kathleen Esfahany at MIT identified a stage of sleep called "sleep onset", which provides a special time for creativity. When people are encouraged to dream about a certain topic during sleep onset, they perform more creatively on related tasks after waking up.

8. What does the report from USAFacts show?

A. Teens stay up mainly for devices.

B. Most US high school students lack sleep.

C. Sleep problems are worse in China.

D. Chinese teens after 2000 all sleep late.

9. What does the underlined word "imperative" probably mean?

A. Workable.

B. Challenging.

C. Unusual.

D. Important.

10. How did sleep-deprived individuals perform in the study?

A. Average results yet innovative.

B. Higher scores but less creative.

C. Poorer performance with repeated errors.

D. Unchanged creativity, declined memory.

11. What did the MIT team discover about "sleep onset"?

A. It provides a chance for creativity.

B. It is the deepest stage of sleep.

C. It only occurs in teenagers.

D. It helps remember dreams better.

PASSAGE D ·  RISING SPORT

Pickleball Is Taking Over the Playground

Seventeen-year-old Mia Carter gave up basketball for its strict demands on height and stamina — until her PE teacher introduced her to pickleball.

"It allows players of all body types to compete equally without fierce physical challenges," Mia shared. Now she takes part in weekly youth pickleball tournaments and feels fully accepted by teammates.

A 2026 global survey covered 15,000 teens aged 14–18 across Europe and North America. Teenage pickleball participation rose by 58% in a year, while traditional sports like football saw only a 7% growth. Sport psychologist Dr Leo Henderson said traditional sports create mental barriers as teens fear being laughed at, while pickleball eases such stress with mild rules and mixed-age matches.

Many coaches hold reservations, arguing pickleball lacks intense training and that its courts occupy limited campus space. Instead of ignoring these doubts, organizers found solutions: communities offer shared courts on weekends, and PE teachers combine running with pickleball drills to ensure enough exercise.

Canadian professional player Jake Torres runs teen camps and finds the sport improves teens' social skills. During doubles, constant communication helps shy kids open up; over 70% of quiet teens made new friends after three months' training.

Pickleball's boom reflects a shift in youth sports values. Young people now value fairness, pleasure and friendship more than winning — a trend that will keep offering friendly athletic choices for students of all levels.

12. Why did Mia Carter fall for pickleball?

A. It brings her many tournament awards.

B. It takes less spare time than other sports.

C. It helps her realize a pro-athlete dream.

D. It suits teens without physical advantages.

13. What can we infer from the survey data in paragraph 2?

A. Pickleball draws more teens into sports.

B. Traditional sports will soon disappear.

C. Most European teens refuse track training.

D. School sports no longer carry mental pressure.

14. How do educators deal with coaches' worries?

A. They cut down pickleball class time.

B. They build exclusive courts on campus.

C. They adopt combined ways to fix problems.

D. They stop promoting it until facilities are ready.

15. Which is the best title for the text?

A. Schools Should Reduce PE Lessons.

B. Pickleball: A Way for Teens to Make Friends.

C. Strength Is Unimportant in Modern Sports.

D. Pickleball: A New Inclusive Sport for Global Teens.

第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分)

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Starting in a new class can be a little challenging for most students. You may face strange faces and worry about how to fit in. 16

Start with simple and warm greetings

Entering a new class always brings nervousness. Small warm acts are the easiest way to break the ice with new classmates. A soft smile and active greetings can leave a friendly first impression. You can start short talks with easy topics, such as school lessons, or favorite sports. 17  They build a basic connection for future friendship.

Be a good listener in communication

A good relationship is built on equal communication. Many students only focus on sharing their own thoughts but ignore listening to others. When your classmates talk, please look at them gently and listen carefully. 18  Showing respect for others' opinions makes you more popular in the new class. True understanding always comes from patient listening.

19 — A small kindness

A small kindness can warm others and shorten the distance between classmates. In your school life, you can give a hand when others are in need. For example, lend your pens to classmates who forget to bring theirs. This can make more classmates trust you and be willing to make friends with you.

Respect differences and be honest

Everyone has different hobbies and opinions in a class. We should learn to respect these differences instead of arguing over small things. Besides, honesty is the most important rule for keeping good relationships. 20  This will help you get along with all new classmates and fit into the new class quickly.

A. Offer kind help in daily life

B. Here are some practical ideas for you

C. Never cut in on their words without thinking

D. Your kindness takes time and small efforts

E. Keep your promises and be true to your classmates

F. Please show us some good ways to avoid the mistakes
