In some countries, people waste a lot of food which is bought in shops and restaurants. What do you think are the reasons? What can be done to solve this problem?
In some countries, large quantities of food purchased from shops and restaurants are thrown away. Commercial promotions, poor household planning and social expectations surrounding hospitality contribute to this waste, which can be reduced through changes to sales practices, better household planning and more responsible restaurant dining.
Commercial incentives and social expectations surrounding hospitality encourage people to buy more food than they need, while poor planning and concerns about appearing ungenerous can lead to the resulting surplus being wasted. In supermarkets, promotions often offer discounts on larger quantities, making additional purchases appear economical even when shoppers are unlikely to consume everything. These purchases create a surplus that may be wasted unless it is stored properly and used in time. Consumers who shop without checking existing supplies may also buy ingredients they already have, leaving older items unused until they spoil and have to be discarded. In restaurants, social expectations can similarly encourage excessive ordering. In some countries, hosts order more food than their guests can eat to demonstrate their generosity and make guests feel welcome. However, they may be reluctant to take leftovers home for fear of losing face, so food that could provide another meal is left behind and thrown away.
To reduce food waste, measures should address excessive supermarket purchases, poor household planning and the social pressures surrounding restaurant dining. Supermarkets could offer discounts on individual items rather than require customers to buy larger quantities, allowing shoppers to save money without purchasing more than they need. Meanwhile, public information campaigns could encourage consumers to check existing supplies before shopping and plan meals around ingredients that need to be used first. These changes would help households avoid unnecessary purchases and consume food before it spoils. In restaurants, menus could clearly indicate portion sizes so that hosts can order enough for their guests without providing excessive quantities. Staff could also routinely offer to pack leftovers, presenting this as standard practice rather than a sign of financial constraint. As taking uneaten food home becomes more socially acceptable, hosts may feel less concerned aboutappearing ungenerous, and food that would otherwise be discarded can be eaten later.
In conclusion, promotions, poor planning and social expectations encourage excessive purchases and the disposal of leftovers. Discounts on individual items, better meal planning, clear information about portion sizes and greater acceptance of taking uneaten food home can help ensure that more of what people buy is consumed.
