Imagine wandering through a dark forest for hours, then traveling all the way home - in a straightline. Bull ants do this every night, and scientists have long wondered how. It turnsouttheyuseapreviouslyunknown type of Moon compass(指南针)一never seen before inthe animal kingdom.

Tb figure it out, Cody Freas, a behavioral ecologist, and his colleagues trapped bull ants the

moment they left their nests. They allowed or denied the insects the chance to observetheMoonby grouping the individuals in a clear bottle or ablackbox.Thentheybroughtthemtoanunfamiliarsetting 200metersaway-anabandonedbasketballcourt-totestwhichdirectiontheytraveledhome.

After comparing their separate paths, the team concluded the behaviorofantsthatcouldseemoonlightwasconsistentwithwhafs calledatime-compensated(时间补偿的)lunar compass. Essentially, the insects observe how quickly the Moon moves toestimatetherelativepositionoftheir home and update that prediction withtime.

The dynamic speed of the Moon's movement complicates thisstrategy.Itrisesslowly, speedsup when it's at the highest point in the sky, and then slows down as it sets. Ants could be terribly misledif they don't account for that, but the researchers discovered the insects have an inborn sense that theMoon's speed shifts, and they compensate forit.

The discovery makes bull ants the first known animals to navigate (导航)using this type of

compass. Navigating with theMoonpresentsseveraladvantages.Unlikestars, whichotherinsectsuse to navigate, the Moon is not blocked by light pollution, and it canbebright enoughtobreak throughclouds.Bullantsalsohavespecializedeyesthatallowthemtoseecircular(环形的)patternsof polarized moonlight spreading across the sky, so they cansensetheMoon'sposition, evenwhenit'sbelow thehorizon.

29.What helps bull ants navigate correctly according to thetext?

A.Their familiarity with the pathto home.B. Their tolerance for the Moon's movement.

C. Their independence from time compensation. D. Their adjustment to the Moon's speed change.

30.What can be inferred from the last but oneparagraph?

A.Navigating with the Moon is reliable for the bullants.

B.Bull antseyes are characterized by circularpatterns.

C.Light pollution affects bull antssense ofdirection.
