“Was that kind of a big waste of money?^^ my 12-year-old son asked. He was referring to my recent graduation from a year-long college program in book and magazine publishing, after my fourteen years as a stay-at-home parent. Now that I'd graduated, the big question I was avoiding came: what now? I guess the question for me actually was, why had I returned to learning in the first place?

rd worked in public relations for years. After the birth of my first child, I felt exhausted, with no remote work or $10-a-day childcare. My entire paycheck would be handed over to a stranger to look after my baby while I dragged myself into a work environment that was becoming psychologically damaging. My heart struggled to make sense of that math.

My decision to stay at home was strengthened when my femily experienced a sudden relocation and unexpected life transitions. All at once I was aware of how brief and precious early childhood could be. I wanted to drink in every minute with my baby. And so I stayed. Two more babies arrived. One year turned into two, and into fourteen.

The "what now?” question ran deep then. I encountered Times Change, a non-profit helping women re-enter the workforce, which pushed me to sign up for a publishing program awakening me to the meaning of my life, who I was and, quite simply, what I liked. I was the only mature student among twenty-something women. And I graduated.

The same question now resurfaces. Recently I heard novelist Leslie Jamison talk about the desire to “throw herself off a creative cliff (悬崖)”.I now understand the cliff is not a dead end but a

starting line. So, here I am, with a mother's recognition that my future is finite (有限的),and my

feetare at the edge of an imaginary cliff.

24.What did the son's question remind the authorof?

A.The cost of hercollege program.B. The value of her staying at home.

C. The plan for her publishingabook.D. The uncertainty about her next step.

25.Why did the author finally decide to be a stay-at-homemother?

A.To escapeherworkplace.B. To cut childcare expenses.

C. To bond more withher child.D. To avoid psychological damage.

26.HowdidTimes Change influence the author?

A.It offered herparenting skills.B. It reminded her of her lifevalue.

C. It eased hercare-giving pressure.D. It enabled her to rejoin the workforce.

27.What has the author come to realize about herexperience?

A.Familycomes first.B. It's never too late to startover.

C. Patiencepays off.D. Learning guaranteespossibilities.

Martha Crawford started having climate change dreams about 11 or 12 years ago. Unlike many of her previously remembered dreams, these were “very explicit (明确的)In one, she's reading a textbook about climate change and then throws it away, pretending it doesn't exist. In another, she5s being shouted at by a climate professor for not paying attention. The meaning was pretty clear, says Crawford, a licensed clinical social worker: "You're not paying attention, and you need to pay attention.

The dreams eventually inspired her to start the Climate Dreams Project in 2019, and ever since, she5s been facilitating a space where people can share climate dreams.

Itwouldseemthatclimatechangehaswoven(编织)itselfintothe“fabricofdreaming”as Crawford puts it. The younger the dreamer, the more prevalentthese dreams become. As early as 2020, a survey found that 14% of people over the age of 55 said they had at least one climate dream in their lives compared to 56% of those aged between 18 and 34. Even more strikingly, 19% of childrenaged 8 to 16 had experienced “bad dreams"-ornightmares(噩梦)一about climate change.

Climate change is slipping into our dreams because it is now part of what we are living in and through. Crawford acknowledges the mental stress of climate dreams, but also believes they mayhelp people feel motivated. And studying dreams can inspire people to better understand how the world affects them emotionally, particularly for things outside of an individuaPs control, like the impactsofclimatechange."Maybedreamscanteachussomethingabouthowtodealwithclimate

In older mice, a self-contracting muscle graft (移植物)increased fat-free mass, strength, and bone density (密度)over 15 weeks, according to a study in Nature Aging, conducted by the group of Ng Shyh-Chang, at the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

An 18-month-old mouse in the research hasn't run on a wheel for a while. Yet under the skin of its back, the graft, implanted three months earlier, continues to tense and relax. No one touches it, no one stimulates it: it contracts on its own, and works even when the animal sleeps.

The muscle graft was built in the laboratory: six million cells taken from the tissues of the same animal multiplied in culture, and reimplanted under the skin.Theimplantedtissueorganizeditself into recognizable fibers and began contracting on its own. Normally, contracting muscles release proteinsandchemicalsignalstoliver(月干),fatandbrain,transformingmovementintowhole-body benefits. The implanted graft sends the same signals without anyonemoving.

On older mice (18 months, the age at which a mouse really begins to age), the effect was obvious. Eight weeks after the implant, the treated animals had more fat-free mass than the controls. After fifteen weeks, they became stronger, developed healthier bones, had fewer harmful substances in the liver, and burned more energy throughout the day.

It should be noted that so far, there have been no noticeable side effects under the conditions tested. However, researchers have not yet conducted extensive studies and long-term monitoring required before considering human use. And there is a difference in weight: a mouse weighs 30 grams, and a human 70 kilos. To get similar results, humans may need multiple grafts at once. But there are risks, exactly for those who would be the first candidates for the treatment: people too weak to exercise.

For now, the oldest gym rule still holds true: no one can do push-ups for you. But if this approach holds up outside the gym, the first to benefit won't be those looking for a workout shortcut. They511 be those who simply can't do itanymore.

32.What is the main finding of thestudy?

A.SelScontracting grafts bring systemicbenefits.

B.Mice with selScontracting grafts becomeinactive.

C.Sleepmakes the sei任contracting grafts work well.

D.Aging in mice with self-contracting grafts isgradual.

33.What is special about the implantedgraft?

A.It forms muscle fibers under theskin.

B.It multiplies cells inside the hosfsbody.

C.It delivers signals to liver, fat andbrain.

D.It sends muscle signals without bodymovement.

34.How does the author show the effect of the graft on mice in paragraph4?

A.By listing the functions oforgans.

B.By illustrating the problems ofaging.

C.By describing the significance of humantrials.

D.By comparing the body changes at differentstages.

35.What can we learn about the grafttreatment?

A.It is not yet ready forhuman use.B. Mass production of the graft is needed.

C. Its side effects matter littleagainst benefits.D. Long-term monitoring has shown fewrisks.

Learning to trust your own judgment is a journey of self-discovery and empowerment. Ifs about boosting the confidence to make decisions in line with your values, needs, and ambitions, even when faced with uncertainty or pressure. It isn't aninborn ability.36The following will guide you throughbuildingthiscruciallifeskill, providingpracticalstrategiestoembrace(拥抱)yourinner wisdom.

The first step in trusting your judgment is acknowledging the barriers that prevent you from doing so. These often show up as constant doubts, second-guessing, and a tendency to seek external approval for every decision. Consider what brings about these feelings. Are you afraid of making mistakes? Do you worry about what others will think?37

Pay attention to the language your inner critic uses. Is it overly critical? Does it use absolutes like "always"or "never"?38The more you familiarize yourself with its tone and vocabulary, the easier it will be to identify it in the moment and challenge its credibility.

One of the most effective ways to build trust in your judgment is to learn from your past decisions.39What information did you have at the time? What were your goals and priorities? What were the outcomes? Analyze the process, not just the result. Even if a decisiondidn't lead to the desired outcome, there?s still valuable information to begained.

40_Embrace the process, be patient with yourself, and celebrate each step forward. Theability to trust your judgment is a powerful strength that will serve you well throughout yourlife.

A.Does it offer a newperspective?

B.Does it compare you unfavorably toothers?

C.Consider what factors influenced yourchoices.

D.Identifying the root causes of your selfdoubt iscrucial.

E.It is a skill that can be developed through effort andpractice.

F.After all, it is significant to balance self:trust for sounddecisions.

G.Learning to trust your own judgment is a transformativejourney.

It was a December night-heavy rain struck against the glass. Noelle ignored the first knock, thinking it was a branch beating the window. No, it couldn't be a caller. Having only recently moved, Noelle barely knew anyone. Besides, surely nobody would be so foolish as to be out on such a night. But the knock came again.

Unwillingly, she went quietly to the door. Looking through the curtain, she stood back, surprised-it was charity collectors! She fished out some coins and opened the door. 'Tm sorry. I didn't answer earlier. I couldn't believe anybody would be around on a night like this,“ she said. "Normally we wouldn't;' the older of the two women explained, "Only we've a significant funding shortfall this year." They were from a local children's home, collecting toys. Noelle followed the woman's eyes. That was Molly, her most treasured possession. At seven, she had longed for a doll with a red dress, but her mother shook her head—with younger brothers to share with and a military family always moving, toys had to be few. The doll nevercame.

Years later, at a Christmas fair she was drawn to one doll-but not for sale. Luckily, on a shelf sellingdollkits, onewitharedpieceofclothprintedwithtinyfairies(仙女)caughthereye. She bought it. Without a sewing machine, she sewed everything by hand. She made her a red dress, gave her long brown hair and sewed her a smiling face. She named her Molly: a present to herself after twenty-odd years of waiting. Later, she even found an antique child's chair that was perfect for Molly.

“Sony,“ the older woman was saying, drawing Noelle from her recollections. ccMy colleague shouldn't have asked, only we're really desperate for suitable items..75 Hearing that, Noelle didn't know what was the right thing to do, staring at Molly on her chair.
