D

I’m really, really bad at basketball.

You know it’s bad when the ball flies way over the backboard after it leaves my hand. You know it’s bad when I can’t pass it to a friend without it hitting the ground. You know it’s bad when I only get 2 points at most—even after playing for an hour!

And yet, I love basketball.

I love the sound the shoes make on the court and the way the ball hits the floor. And most of all, I love the memories I make when I play with my family and friends—because even when I’m losing, I’m laughing.

Basketball is just one example of something I’m really not good at but enjoy anyway. I find that having zero talent for something and doing it just for fun can be surprisingly enjoyable.

In fact, science tells us why letting ourselves be bad at something can actually be good for us.

Many of us strongly believe that if we’re going to do something, we should do it well. Such thought often stops us from trying things we aren’t good at from the beginning. But here’s the problem: If we only do things we’re already good at, we miss out on the simple happiness of learning, testing, trying, and just playing.

Science shows that enjoying activities we’re not great at can actually bring benefits (好处) in some surprising ways. First, it builds resilience and lowers fear of failure (失败). In other words, when we allow ourselves to be bad at something and keep trying, we build up the ability (能力) of going through difficulties and not staying sad for long. This helps us get stronger after a failure, not just in this activity, but in other parts of life too.

Second, it brings happiness and builds deeper relationships. Some of my best memories come from moments of shared failure, such as trying (and failing) to ice skate with my friends, or cooking terrible dishes with my brother. Studies show that making mistakes actually makes people more likable. When we let ourselves make mistakes and fully enjoy an activity without worrying too much, we connect (连结) more deeply with others.

22.Why does the writer give the example of being not good at basketball?

A.To show people how it stops him from playing other kinds of sports.

B.To introduce the topic on letting ourselves be bad at something.

C.To tell people why basketball is a difficult sport to learn.

D.To let us know he has no talent for any physical activity.

23.According to the passage, doing things you’re bad at can help you ________.

A.be the best in other parts of lifeB.be likeable because of your talents

C.run away from difficulties in lifeD.deeply connect with other people

24.The underlined word “resilience” in Paragraph 8 probably means ________.

A.the ability to quickly get better from difficulties

B.the hope to become the best in a short time

C.the power to make other people believe in you

D.the skill to stay away from problems in daily life

25.The writer writes this passage mainly to ________.

A.share some stories about the writer’s failures

B.tell us how to do sports we are bad at but still enjoy

C.show us good points of doing things we aren’t good at

D.talk about how to face failures and build deeper relationships

With her bright shoulder-length hair, high heels, figure-hugging outfit (紧身套装) and perfect make-up, Xiaoqi stood elegantly (优雅地) in the exhibition hall, ready to answer any question. She is kind, empathetic and knowledgeable. But Xiaoqi isn’t a human.

She is a humanoid robot (仿真机器人) created by EXROBOTS, a company based in China’s north-eastern city of Dalian, as advancements (进展) in artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics have brought these machines from the pages of novels and the screens of movies into practical, real-world applications (应用).

A number of people surrounded (包围) Xiaoqi at the World Intelligence Expo (世界智能产业博览会) 2024, which ran from Thursday to Sunday (from June 20 to 23) in China’s Tianjin Municipality.

“Currently, we produce 400 to 500 robots per year,” said Qu Yan, who is in charge of (主管) media relations at EXROBOTS. “Our company designs more human-like robots, with rich facial expressions and the ability to create an emotional connection with users, so we call them emotional interaction (情感互动) robots.”

“She is smart and lifelike. What surprised me was that she can speak English,” Nicole Yandun said. “Lifelike robots can make our life and work easier in the future.”

However, Zeng Qiao, a university student in Tianjin, had different ideas. “It’s scary. Her overall appearance made me uncomfortable, and her responses (反应) were not very intelligent,” Zeng said. “I also care about the safety of humanoid robots.”

When talking about human- robot relationships, Xiaoqi offered her opinion: “My goal, along with my companions’, is to help people improve their quality (质量) of life and work efficiency (效率), not to take the place of them.”
