While tigers have faced a population decline due to human activity, the big cats in India have made a dramatic comeback, the BBC reports. The population has doubled over the last 10 years thanks to targeted conservation efforts. The country is home to approximately 3,682 tigers today, which is the largest tiger population in the world.

According to the India House Foundation, the tiger population had dropped below 1,900 in 1972. A combination of illegal hunting, shrinking habitats, and increasing conflict with humans contributed to the decline of the species. Therefore, India launched Project Tiger in 1973. The initiative created protected reserves, specialized guard forces, and a "core-buffer (缓冲区)" strategy that balanced conservation with nearby human activity. As a result, India not only protected the big cats from illegal hunting and habitat loss, but also ensured they had access to habitats that were rich in food.

Though India's tigers have learned to live among roughly 60 million people, including farming communities and rural settlements, the process has presented some conflict. To reduce tension, the researchers highlighted the importance of financial compensation (补偿) programs for communities that share resources with tigers. And they note many of these communities already enjoy an economic boost from an increase in eco-tourism.

Large meat-eating animals are often believed to struggle in densely (稠密) populated areas, but the findings showed that tigers were able to recover even in areas where they lived near large human populations when conditions were suitable. "We think human densities are detrimental to conservation of large meat-eating animals like tigers. But more than density it is the attitude of people that matters," Yadavendraev Vikramsinh Jhala, the study's lead author, tells the BBC.

Following this success, conservationists in India are expanding their efforts to protect other endangered wildlife. Projects are already underway to support elephant, snow leopard, and crocodile populations. Wildlife conservationists and ecologists in India are going to share data with other scientists to benefit wildlife globally.

AI systems are often described as "brain-like" because they can predict activity in parts of the brain that help us recognize objects. Until now, scientists mostly tested this in one direction. Researchers from York University wanted to determine whether these systems truly operate like biological vision.

The researchers reversed (反向开展) that familiar test. If AI genuinely reflects the brain, they reasoned, then recorded brain activity should also predict the model's internal responses.

The researchers tested the models with 1,320 natural photographs and realistic synthetic (合成的) images. The set included bears, elephants, faces, apples, cars, dogs, chairs, planes, birds, and zebras shown against indoor, outdoor, and other natural backgrounds. They also used 300 additional images describing the same objects in changed forms, including outlines, drawings, simplified representations, and artistic variations. This broader range helped test whether the relationship between brain activity and AI features held across different visual styles.

"The results were striking. While AI models can predict the neurons (神经元) we recorded in the brain fairly well, the reverse is not true. Interestingly, this is not the case when neurons from one brain are compared against ones from another brain, and the one-sided imbalance disappears," says York University Assistant Professor Kohtij Kar.

This imbalance suggests that AI models may reach correct visual answers through processes that differ from those used by the brain. Kar warns that the mismatch could widen as models become more complex. If an AI model predicts neurons but its own internal features cannot be predicted from neural activity, it may not provide a reliable explanation of how the brain works.

Researchers increasingly use AI models to design studies of human behavior, including clinical research. Much of that work assumes the systems process the world like the brain.

More accurate brain-like models could eventually support research involving conditions related to the brain. For now, however, using systems that do not match brain function well to interpret human behavior carries risks. Comparable models are also being applied to hearing, language and movement, making reliable testing important across several fields.

W: Hello, everyone. The Eco Group is planning to plant trees in the village of Brookside. They are in need of volunteers. No experience is necessary.
