I'd like to think I'm a fairly modern guy. I use a smartwatch, order groceries online, and can even park using my car's sensors. So, when my 15yearold daughter, Emma, declared my wardrobe a "disaster zone" and offered a "digital makeover," I foolishly agreed.
It started with a simple app. Emma took photos of all my clothes, and the app promised the perfect daily outfit based on the weather, my calendar, and a colormatching algorithm (算法). I was impressed. For the first week, it was a gamechanger. "Wear the blue shirt with the grey trousers," the app would command, and I'd stride into the office feeling like a fashion icon.
Trouble began subtly. The app, perhaps influenced by Emma's own tastes, started suggesting items I'd forgottena pair of bright orange shorts I'd bought for a holiday ten years ago. When I ignored it, the app lowered my "style score", meaningless but frustrating. Then, the weather update failed, insisting snow in July and telling me to wear my heaviest coat. My colleagues thought I had lost my mind. I tried to override the app, but Emma had locked me out of"Expert Mode."
Feeling defeated, I confessed to my wife. She laughed and reminded me of something I'd forgotten: I don't have a style score; I have a mirror. I don't have an algorithm for rain, I have a weather app on my phone. And most importantly, I don't need a digital Emma; I have a real one, and her opinion matters far more than any app's.
So, I uninstalled the app. My wardrobe is back to its old, familiar chaos. And it feels just right. The only opinion that still counts is the one I hear from the hallway every morning:"Dad, you're wearing that?"
24.How did the author find the app's firstweek suggestions?
A. Confusing and risky. B. Helpful and exciting.
C. Practical and creative. D. Complex and costly.
25.Why does the author mention the shorts and the coat in paragraph 3?
A. To show the app's absurd advice B. To prove the app learned his habits.
C. To explain his need for style score. D. To suggest the app was hard to use
26.How does the author's wife view the app?
A. It needs improvement badly. B. It replaces human judgement.
C. It makes unreliable predictions. D. It serves as a reference at best
27.What message is conveyed in the text?
A. Digital tools can ruin our daily style. B. Teenagers know more about technology.
C. Reallife connections beat digital advice D. Wardrobes should not be managed by apps.
C
Before full sentences, human language may have relied on just two words at a time. According to new research published in PNAS Nexus, the earliest form of language used simple verbnoun pairings like "catch fish" or "throw spear." There were no tense markers, no clear subjects or objects, just a concise way to express action. That simple structure was enough for early humans, for whom speed and clarity mattered more than precision.
Traces of this early system still exist today. Linguists call them "living fossils"words like "killjoy," "pickpocket," and "crybaby" combine a verb and a noun into a single compound word. What sets them apart is how loosely they follow modern grammar. In "pickpocket,"it is unclear who is doing the action. That ambiguity reflects an earlier stage of language, before grammar became fully structured. Similar constructions appear across languages, showing they are not mere accidents but echoes of an early way of building meaning.
These early combinations extended far beyond mere action descriptions; they expanded what language could do. By pairing concrete words, people could express abstract ideas. A phrase like "time flies" stretches literal meaning into metaphor, opening the door to more complex thought. That same mechanism (机制) explains humor unexpected word combinations create surprise, which is often the origin of humor.
This early language also played a role in social competition. The ability to create clever, memorable combinations helped individuals gain social advantage. Quick, expressive language could establish status or challenge opponents. As one researcher put it, this reflected a kind of "survival of the sharpest."
Over time, these simple twoword structures became the foundation for more complex grammar. Even as language grew more complex, those early building blocks never disappeared. They remain hidden in modern speechsmall but powerful traces of how human language began.
28.What characterized the earliest form of language?
A. Complex grammar. B. Verbnoun pairings.C. Full sentences. D.Tense markers.
29.What does the underlined word "ambiguity" in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Simplicity of rules. B. Depth of meaning. C. Complexity of form. D. Lack of clarity.
30.What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Functions of humor. B. Origin of abstract thought.
C. Features of metaphors. D. Power of word combinations.
31.What is the main function of the last paragraph?
A. To stress the structures' historical role. B. To introduce new evidence for the research.
C. To explain grammar's rapid development. D. To question the findings of previous studies.
D
Nearly half of Americans and around 40% of Britons now use smartwatches, smart rings, or phone apps to track their sleep. But are these devices accurate? And do they actually help? A new study published in Nature found a Ushaped relationship between sleep duration and biological ageing, which provides a standard to judge whether the sleeptracking tools work properly. Using data from roughly 500, 000 people, researchers discovered that those who slept between 6.4 and 7.8 hours per night showed slower ageing than those who slept either more or less.
Sleep trackers promise to help users hit this sweet spot. Most trackers distinguish sleep from wakefulness fairly well. Several studies have compared them to polysomnography (多导睡眠监测) the gold standard that uses monitors to record eye movements, brain activity and heart rate. A 2024 paper found that three popular wearables agreed with polysomnography about 95% of the time in telling sleep from wakefulness.
However, trackers become less reliable when identifying different sleep stages. A good night requires cycling between REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep and several stages of nonREM sleep. Wearables match polysomnography on sleepstage classification only 5080% of the time. "That earns a C+ to B+," says Harvard scientist Rebecca Robbins. Yet many devices still include these inaccurate readings in their sleep scores.
Despite trackers' shortcomings, most sleep researchers view them positively. They say the devices give them a better, more objective sense of how long they slept. Plus, they do seem to improve sleep habits. In a survey by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, 55% of adults who reported using sleep trackers said they had changed their behaviour after learning from the data. One small study, published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine in 2020, found that wearing a sleep tracker for a week improved selfreported sleep quality.
Too much data can have downsides, though. Unlike trying to eat healthily or exercise, putting more thought and effort into sleeping can backfire. As many as 30% of sleeptracker users report feeling anxious about their dataand that anxiety can feed into a vicious cycle, since concern about poor sleep is itself one of the most common causes of sleepless nights. But sleep data is not worth losing sleep over. There is a simpler alternative: whether you wake up feeling rested is the best indicator of how good your night actually was.
32.What is the key finding of the new study?
A. Longer sleep ensures health. B. Sleep duration impacts aging.
C. Middleaged people sleep less. D.Sleep trackers are widely used.
33.What can be inferred about sleep trackers?
A. They misjudge sleep stages. B. They match the gold standard.
C. They exactly track brain waves. D. They poorly sense wakefulness.
34.What does the author suggest for judging sleep?
A. Ignoring sleep data. B. Listening to your body.
C. Using simpler devices. D. Relying on trackers scores.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. New Findings on Sleep Cycles B. Ways to Judge Sleep Quality
C. Sleep Trackers: Help or Harm? D. Can Sleep Data Cause Anxiety?

Beyond PaperThe Culture of Giving Cards
The tradition of sending greeting cards has survived the rise of digital communication. Though often inexpensive, cards carry our thoughts and emotions. 36
Since the earliest days of written communication, special occasions such as birthdays and seasonal celebrations have been marked by handwritten notes. Ancient Egyptians wrote on scrolls. In China, wishes of good fortune were sent in decorative red envelopes around the New Year. 37 These early gestures laid the foundation for the greeting card culture we know today.
Before the printing revolution of the 15th century, only the wealthy could afford to send cards. The invention of printing made them more accessible. As industrialization swept through the 19th century, sending cards became a widespread practice. During the Victorian period, greeting cards became varied in design. 38 The cards themselves became treasured keepsakes.
39 Most still leave blank space inside for a handwritten message, preserving the personal touch. Some can even be customized online with photos of loved ones.
The global greeting card market is now valued at around $19 billion. 40 They are using recycled materials, biodegradable glitter, and paper made from sustainable plant fibers like bamboo. This way, we can continue the kind tradition of cardgiving without harming the planet.
A. Today, greeting cards come in countless designs.
B. They were decorated with lace, ribbon, and patterns.
C. Similarly, cards with Persian poetry were exchanged.
D. However, digital cards are becoming more popular today.
E. The designs were often simple and plain in the early days.
F. Their rich history spreads across centuries and civilizations.
G. With green awareness, many producers are changing their methods.

It was a bright, unseasonably warm Saturday in late April when 32yearold Bennett Reinhardt and his childhood friend Mary decided to go kayaking (皮划艇) on the Elk River, a winding, fastmoving waterway that cuts through the hills of northern Alabama. The plan was simple: paddle a gentle stretch, enjoy the sunshine, and be back by midafternoon. Neither had any idea the day would turn into a fight for survival.
The trouble started almost immediately. The river, swollen from days of heavy rain, was running much faster than usual. Within minutes of launching, the current grabbed their kayaks and swept them downstream far quicker than they'd anticipated. Before they knew it, they'd drifted into a narrow, rocky gorge (峡谷) known locally as "The Narrows".
Panic set in as Bennett's kayak crashed into a rock and turned over. He hit the water hard, the cold current instantly stealing his breath. Mary, who was just ahead, managed to paddle to the bank and climb to safety, but Bennett was goneswept downstream, bouncing off rocks, his body rolling in the icy water.
Some 200 yards downstream, Bennett finally managed to grab onto a small tree growing out of the riverbank. The tree he clung to was small, its roots barely holding in the soft soil. Each surge of current pulled at his body, threatening to tear him loose. Bennett's hands were numb, his muscles shaking from hypothermia (失温), his mind foggy from the shock. He clung there, gasping, as the water raged past. He shouted for help, but the roaring current drowned most of his voice. His strength was fading fast, and he knew he couldn't hold on much longer. "Please," he whispered, "someone help me."
Tom Carter, a construction worker who lived a halfmile from the river, was working in his yard. He had lived there his whole life and had pulled more than one careless paddler out of trouble.

One possible version:
An Unsung Hero on Campus
I'd like to take this chance to show my gratitude to our school cleaner, an elderly woman whose name I hardly know.
Every morning, before any of us arrives, the steady swish of her broom sweeping fallen leaves across the playground can be heard. Rain or shine, she never misses a day. What touches me most is that she always greets us with a warm smile, though few of us bother to respond. Her silent dedication keeps our campus clean and pleasant, yet we seldom pause to say "thank you."
I want to express my sincere thanks to her. Her quiet devotion makes our school a nicer place for us to study in. Every unsung hero on campus deserves our gratitude.
One possible version:
On hearing the frantic shouts, Tom grabbed a rope and headed toward the water. Reaching the bank, he spotted Bennett clinging to the small tree, his face blue with cold. The bank was steep and slippery, and the current was far too strong to swim against. Tom quickly tied one end of the rope to a sturdy tree and threw the other end toward Bennett. "Grab it!" he yelled. Bennett lunged forward and caught the rope with both hands. Tom braced himself and pulled with all his might, inch by inch, until he seized Bennett's shoulders and dragged him onto the muddy shore. Bennett collapsed, coughing up water, his whole body trembling.
Moments later, Mary arrived and saw Bennett lying on the muddy bank. She rushed to his side and knelt beside him, her eyes filled with tears. "I thought I'd lost you," she sobbed. Bennett managed a weak smile and squeezed her hand. "Thanks to him," he whispered, nodding toward Tom, who was already wrapping his jacket around Bennett's shaking shoulders. Tom helped them back to his house nearby, where he made hot drinks and called for help. Sitting by the fire, Bennett stared at the stranger who had saved his life and made a silent promise: if ever given the chance, he would do the same for someone else.
A 篇
From the observation platform, visitors can enjoy a spectacular view of the Bay Area.(从观景台可以欣赏到海湾地区的壮丽景色),随后总结The Campanile is truly not to be missed.(钟楼确实不容错过)。 故选 A。
在 “Ticket Prices” 部分明确列出: Youth (2 and under): Free(2 岁及以下儿童免费)。
For the first week, it was a gamechanger... I'd stride into the office feeling like a fashion icon.(第一周,它改变了我的生活…… gamechanger和feeling like a fashion icon均传达了强烈的积极情绪。
根据第三段中started suggesting items I'd forgottena pair of bright orange shorts I'd bought for a holiday ten years ago以及the weather update failed, insisting snow in July and telling me to wear my heaviest coat. My colleagues thought I had lost my mind.

In "pickpocket," it is unclear who is doing the action. That ambiguity reflects an earlier stage of language(在 pickpocket 中,不清楚是谁在做这个动作。

However, trackers become less reliable when identifying different sleep stages(然而,追踪器在识别不同睡眠阶段时变得不太可靠) 以及 故选 A。
根据最后一段最后一句whether you wake up feeling rested is the best indicator of how good your night actually was(醒来时是否感到精力充沛是衡量你夜间睡眠质量的最佳指标) 可知,作者建议倾听自己的身体感受来判断睡眠质量。

Similarly, cards with Persian poetry were exchanged(类似地,波斯诗歌卡片也被传递) 承接上文,继续列举波斯的类似传统。
They were decorated with lace, ribbon, and patterns(它们用蕾丝、丝带和图案装饰) 是对精美设计的具体展开和举例说明。
下文Most still…和Some can even…
With green awareness, many producers are changing their methods作为段首句,总领并解释了下文的具体做法。

(Text 1)
W: Next, please. How can I help you?
M: I'd like to mail this book to London. Could you tell me how much it costs for airmail?
W: Sure. Let me weigh it for you. That'll be $25. 80.
(Text 2)
W: Sir, I'm afraid your flight to Chicago has been overbooked. Would you mind taking the next one at 3:00pm?
M: But I have a connecting flight to catch! Is there any other option?
W: We can put you on standby for the 1:30 pm flight. Please wait for our announcement.
(Text3)
M: This apartment is only a fiveminute walk from the subway station.
W: True, but the rent is almost twice what we're paying now.
M: Well, location matters more to me than price.
(Text4)
M: I planned to create artworks with that popular AI painting tool these days.
W: I tried it last week. Isn't its drawing effect amazing? What made you change your mind?
M: The basic version is free, but to get vivid, unique details, I have to pay monthly fees I can't afford right now. Besides, I find the color selection too complex.
(Text 5)
M: I spend my free time cutting short videos these days.
W: That sounds fun. What do you usually film in your videos?
M: Daily little moments around me, and I share them online.
(Text6)
M: Excuse me, I'm trying to find Maple Street, but I've been driving around for 20 minutes. My GPS says I'm here, but I don't see the street sign.
W: Ah, it's because that big tree in front of the corner house is blocking the sign. You've passed it twice! Maple Street is that small road right next to the old bookstore.
M: Oh, I see it now! Thank you. I'm meeting a friend for dinner at the new Italian restaurant on that street.
W: Oh, that's a great place! Enjoy your meal!
(Text7)
M: Good morning, Betty! Beautiful day, isn't it?
W: It certainly is, Carl. I was just about to water my tomatoes.
M: They look fantastic! You've really got a green thumb. I can never get my plants to grow that well.
W: Thanks! It took me a few years to figure out the right soil and watering schedule. But once you get the hang of it, it's quite rewarding.
M: I bet. You know, seeing your garden makes me want to start one of my own. Is it a lot of work to keep it going?
W: It is, especially in the summer when you have to water every day. But the taste of homegrown vegetables is worth it. It's the main reason I started. Plus, it saves us quite a bit on grocery bills.
M: That sounds like a great idea. Maybe I'll give it a try next spring.
W: You should! And if you need any help, just knock on my door.
(Text8)
M: Hello, I'm calling about the summer job you advertised. Is the position still available?
W: Yes, it is. We're looking for someone to lead hiking tours in the national park.
M: That sounds great. I love the outdoors and I know the park quite well. I've been going there since I was a kid.
W: Good. You'll need to be familiar with the park to guide groups on three different trails and share some interesting facts about the local wildlife along the way.
M: I can do that. Do I need to bring my own equipment?
W: No. We'll provide everything you need — a uniform, a first aid kit, and a park vehicle for getting to the trailheads.
M: What about a phone? Do I need one for communication?
W: Yes, you'll need your own mobile phone to contact the office in case of emergencies. Besides, you must have a valid driver's license to drive the vehicle.
M: No problem, I have one.
W: Can you come in for an interview on Friday morning?
M: Sure. I'll be there.
(Text9)
W: Hi, Mike. It's Anna. I'm calling about our dinner reservation this evening.
M: Hi, Anna. Is everything okay?
W: Well, I just realized I have a meeting scheduled from 4:00 to 6:00, but the client just asked to extend it by another hour. Our booking is at 7:30. Could we move it to 8:00 instead?
M: I doubt whether they can accommodate us that late. The restaurant gets very busy after 7:30.
W: That's what I was afraid of. But I really don't want to miss this dinner. I've been looking forward to trying this place for weeks.
M: If I were you, I'd phone them right now and ask if there's any table available after 8:00.
W: That's a good idea. But I'm afraid they won't have any. The restaurant is always fully booked on Fridays.
M: I see. Then how about we just order takeout and eat at my place? We can reschedule the fancy dinner for this weekend.
W: That actually sounds better. I'll call the restaurant and cancel the booking. Can you pick up the food on your way home?
M: Sure. I'll leave the office around 6:15 and pick it up. Text me the order.
W: Great. See you later. M: See you.
(Text10)
W: Good evening, everyone. Welcome to our weekly environmental corner. Today, I want to talk about something we all experience but rarely connect to the bigger picture — weather. Last summer, I recorded the highest temperatures in thirty years. July alone broke seven daily records. I was shocked to see my electricity bills double. I was using air conditioning almost 24 hours a day. But what worried me most was noticing how many of our local trees had dried up and died. This got me thinking: if we don't act now, our summers will only get hotter. So I started a small campaign in my community, encouraging people to plant shade trees around their homes. It's not a huge step, but it's a beginning. I'm not saying we can change the climate overnight — if only it were that simple. But every tree we plant today will cool our streets tomorrow. So here's my suggestion: this weekend, buy a young tree, and plant it in your yard. You'll not only save on cooling costs, but you'll also leave a greener city for your children. Thank you for listening.
